Inspirational and Fabulous Atlanta Workshop

A few weeks ago, I had the pleasure of attending a workshop with fabulous painter and instructor, Jim Richards of Atlanta, Georgia.  I met Jim a few years ago at AIS (American Impressionists Show) in Carmel and again when I've attended America's Great Paint Out in Apalachicola, Florida for the past two years where I got to watch Jim in action on the plein air circuit.  For sure, there is much to admire about this guy's painting ability, but there's even more to admire about Jim for his natural ability as a really fine teacher!  Jim is so present with you when he is at your easel and really digs into what's going on in the painting… the good and the not so good.  I know he took me to another level and there were many "aha" moments for me!  I can't thank Jim Richards enough.

Here are my efforts during this three day workshop.  I learned so much from painting these landscapes and had a blast!  Inspired beyond words!

Landscape, Monochomatic (Value) to Color... John Pototschnik Workshop

Photo Reference

Color Study
Spring in the Courson's Backyard by J Joy Nocifora ©2011

I enjoyed developing the concepts in this landscape from the monochromatic study to color. John Pototschnik has a masterful and invaluable way of presenting color to his students based on the Munsell color system. "Color enhances the mood," says John.
Questions you should consider: 1. have you selected the proper palette for your concept? (Is it a cloudy, sunny, foggy... fall, winter, etc.) 2. have you mixed the correct hue and value consistent with the concept?
It is all very challenging, interesting and fun and it is very much something you have to work with a lot to fully understand the complexities of color and their relationships.
Just wondering... did I capture the concept in this color study?

"Journey West"... thoughts and review

Getting Off to a Good Start... Plein Air Painting in Scottsdale, Arizona

After my trip West and a week long workshop at the Scottsdale Artists School with Jennifer McChristian, I had an email from my friend and artist, Carmen Sharpe, asking me to tell about what I learned. So this is especially for you Carmen and I hope that others might find this brief overview interesting or helpful.

Jennifer emphasizes the basics of what a good "plein air" painting should have. 1) good design/composition, 2) correct drawing, 3) correct values, 4) temperature/color, AND 5) that everything in a painting is in relationship to everything else. Sounds simple??? Ummmm.....

For good design and composition I used my view finder. To establish values of a composition I mixed a 4 color grey scale to block in my drawing. (See photo of Jennifer's palette, above.) Next, using a mixture of Indian Yellow and Thalo Red Rose thinned with turp, I toned my canvas and drew the composition using the grey scale painting as the guide. This really helped me to get the values right! But the finer details of temperature in relation to everything else was a challenge. Jennifer is so skillful when it comes to color and temperature. Sometimes my shadows were too purple or too blue and the color of the warm areas needed adjusting. I was amazed when she would make the slightest adjustments to the color/temperature (and always in relationship to something else in the painting) what a difference it would make. She makes it look so easy! LOL!

I might add that in addition to being an excellent instructor Jennifer is fun, energetic, upbeat, and patient. I especially like the way she explains the what, the why and the how of everything she does, while she paints and when she would come by my easel to help me. Very instructive!
Jennifer emphasizes drawing and sketching as the basis for being a good painter. She says that she takes a sketchbook with her wherever she goes! I bought a beautiful sketchbook with a handmade leather cover , which I love, from Sharon Hall at Celebration of Fine Art in Scottsdale, AZ.
Thanks also to Ben, her husband, who helped with the ins and outs of our locations each day.

Nancy Franke Workshop... Fantastic!

Can't believe I have been to Atlanta's, Art School of Sandy Springs and I am back from a fast paced, two day, exciting workshop with Nancy Franke. Nancy is quite a dynamo and I put her at the top of my list of outstanding workshop instructors. Here you see Nancy giving her group a brief introduction and overview. Handouts are being distributed and everything is so well organized and explained that there is no need for notetaking.
Nancy did a fabulous demo using her limited palette of ultramarine blue, lemon yellow, cad.
red medium, white and she occasionally uses
alizarin crimson.
Our first exercise was a paper towel painting. Do you see that piece of paper in Nancy's hand? That is a "paper towel brush" or "tool" as Nancy calls it. One piece of paper towel is rolled loosely, then folded in half and twisted about 1 1/2 inches down from the fold. After setting up what we were to paint, we had 10 minutes to complete the paper towel painting. Dynamo Nancy made the rounds several times and like a bee with all its energy, gave us words of encouragement and lots of laughs.
Tomorrow, I will post a painting (unfinished of course) that I worked on in the workshop.
